In rescue you frequently hear and see horror
stories, unfortunately it is common and is a real cause of rescue
burnout. A lot of these sad stories relate to senior dogs who
have been mistreated through neglect and then left behind in their old
age.Although it can be
financially challenging, we at TnT Sharpei Rescue try to help in
situations where a dog has no future because of their age and medical
condition. The dogs on this page are what we call "Sanctuary
Dogs", meaning they have been placed in long term foster homes who
will love them and provide the necessary care, while TnT remains
financially responsible for them.
If we are able to find sponsors for
our senior animals whose hope of adoption is slim, we will be able to
continue helping them into loving homes for the time they have left.
Althugh fostering and transports might not be the rescue work you are
cut out for, sponsoring animals to assist with their medical costs is
a critical rescue role.
We are looking for sponsors for
these doggies, someone who will contribute once or monthly to help
with their costs. Anything would be appreciated, if you are
interested in more information on our sponsor program, or to sponsor
one of our Golden Oldies please email
tdcole@shaw.ca for more details.

Maggie - this girl is very laid back
and mothering. Maggie was left at the shelter by her people
after 12 years- yes 12 years!! She was left at the
shelter with an unattended tumour. This turned out to be benign
and was removed.

Maggie is a shar-pei x.
Maggie is one of our sanctuary dogs.
We are looking for sponsors for these lovely animals whose family
abandoned them in their senior years.
Isn't she a sweetie?

Here is our Maggie II...

Notes from our foster mother -
Maggie is is a
wonderful dog in all aspects except for large dog aggression. I have
been doing some socializing with her and so far is doing amazing with
smaller dogs however, does not do well with dogs larger than herself.
Physically she is
doing well- definitely some issue with blood clotting- small tears
yield significant bleeding. Eye sight is very poor, hearing fair,
smell is incredible (she has dug up some dog toys and bones from years
ago).
*Her scars are
pretty nasty- I have never seen anything quite like it.
She has a mass which appears immobile on her throat. Her bark seems
significantly affected by this mass- she has a low muffled bark (only
heard when a large dog is nearby). It does not seem to affect daily
functioning and obviously has been present for quite some time. I am
monitoring for changes in size and mobility.
Maggie
is smart and incredibly athletic- she
would make an amazing agility dog. I have done some agility work with
her and she is great- I have high hopes for enrolling her into the
local agility club once she gets over her dog aggression
We have high hopes of being able to
move Maggie to our adoptable dogs page in the future. Her foster
mother is doing an incredible job of retraining her.
(*Maggie was attacked numerous times
by other dogs before she arrived in our care. It is
understandable that she has behavioural issues at this time,
however she is being worked with to help her overcome her fear.)
